Best Essential Oils For Sleep Apnea
In this post I want to take a look at the best essential oils for sleep apnea. Before doing that I would just like to state that while essential oils can be useful for treating the symptoms of sleep apnea they should never be used as the sole method of dealing with sleep apnea. Always see a sleep physician if you suspect you may have sleep apnea.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition where you stop breathing during sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea- This condition occurs when you have a blockage in the airway that prevents you from taking a breath. A partial blockage of the airway is what causes snoring.
- Central Sleep Apnea- This condition occurs when the brain has trouble transmitting signals to breathe to the respiratory muscles such as the diaphragm.
Essential oils are mainly useful for helping with symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Although there are not many clinical studies pertaining directly to their use with sleep apnea there are studies of essential oils that show the effects of the naturally occurring chemicals in the essential oils which may be useful for relieving some of the symptoms.
The Best Essential Oils For Sleep Apnea
Keep in mind that essential oils should be used in a diffuser or, if used topically, must be diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, coconut, grapeseed or jojoba oils.
Eucalyptus essential oil is effective at breaking down mucus and helping to relieve stuffiness in the sinuses and chest. It can help open the sinuses so you can breath through your nose. A big cause of snoring is breathing through the mouth so anything you can do to prevent that will help with snoring.
You can use a few drops in a diffuser or mix a few drops with a carrier oil and rub some of it under your nose to keep your nose and sinuses clear through the night.
Just like Eucalyptus, Peppermint essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve nasal and chest congestion.
Use a few drops in a diffuser or dilute with a carrier oil and rub it under the nostrils to keep your upper airway open while you sleep. You can also gargle with a few drops in a glass of water. Be sure not to swallow any of it! DO NOT try this with Eucalyptus as it is highly toxic if swallowed.
Sweet Marjoram essential oil is extracted from the same herb you use in your cooking. It also has soothing properties and works as an expectorant to help break up mucus so you can breath easier.
Use a few drops in a diffuser beside your bed, or dilute with a carrier oil and rub on your chest or on the soles of your feet.
Lavender essential oil is known for it’s calming and soothing effects. It is also very relaxing and so can help you fall asleep and stay asleep, getting the rest you need.
Lavender can be used many different ways. You can place a few drops in a diffuser beside the bed, dilute with a carrier oil and rub on the soles of your feet, on your chest, or on the back of your neck. My favorite use is to place 10 drops of lavender oil in a spritzer bottle with 3 tablespoons of vodka and fill with distilled water. Then you can lightly spritz the bed before going to sleep. The vodka is to help the oil disperse in the water. Shake before use each time.
Roman Chamomile is another essential oil known for it’s soothing and calming effects. You can use a few drops of Roman Chamomile and a few of Lavender for a one-two punch for restful sleep.
Place a few drops of Roman Chamomile in a diffuser next to your bed while you sleep. Add a few drops of Lavender essential oil for a truly relaxing and restful sleep.
This is a list of what I consider the five best essential oils for sleep apnea. I would love to hear your thoughts or comments.
Also, in addition to essential oils the aromatherapy online store has diffusers available should you need one when you purchase your oils.
Please consult your physician before trying any changes to your treatment plan. Your doctor will let you know if essential oils are an additional option for you.
